What is Myofascial Massage?
Unlike some other massage therapies, Myofascial Massage has a more medical focus.
“Fascia” is another word for muscle tissue, and when we talk about fasciae, we’re generally speaking about the blood vessels, connective tissue, nerves, and muscle groups that bind together body parts and allow them to move together smoothly. Fasciae may hold organs in place, provide support for nerves or blood vessels, and transmit movements between bone and muscle.
Myofasciae are muscle tissue, and Myofascial Massage specifically concerns the tissue that helps muscles contract and relax. Sometimes, though, those tissues don’t do their jobs quite right, and the muscles don’t fully relax. Instead, they constrict and become tight. Pain, at worst, or discomfort may result.
Traumatized myofasciae are known medically as Myofascial Trigger Points. You’re probably more familiar with the common terminology of muscle knots. Myofascial Massage is used to resolve the knots and get you back to 100%.
The goal of Myofascial Massage is to reduce pain by releasing tension and tightness in the trigger points. Interestingly, it can be surprisingly difficult to determine which trigger points are responsible for seemingly localized pain. Therefore, Myofascial Massage is often used broadly rather than for single trigger points.
Myofascial Massage and Deep Tissue Massage are terms that are often used interchangeably.
Does Myofascial Massage Hurt?
What does a Myofascial Massage feel like? What conditions or types of pain can it help?
Myofascial Massage methods help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with many different conditions and symptoms, including:
Each Myofascial Massage session at In2itive Touch & Wellness is customized to the needs of each client. Some people describe it as deeply relaxing, while others say it “hurts so good.” The truth is that some myofascial techniques can feel uncomfortable; the fascia is being released and separated, after all. It might feel temporarily like a burning, itching, prickling, or stinging sensation. Such sensations, however, typically pass quickly, and relief can be felt almost immediately.

Treatment with In2itive Touch & Wellness Myofascial Massage benefits clients in numerous ways.
Whether you’re an elite athlete, a weekend warrior, a desk jockey, or dealing with physical trauma, Myofascial Massage provides many health and wellness benefits.
Pain relief: It’s why most people seek out Myofascial Massage and why this treatment is so effective. Whatever type of pain you are dealing with, trigger points are involved. Frequently the pain that results from sensitive trigger points manifests as “muscle knots.” Pain and discomfort from such knots can radiate, causing more pain and discomfort. Addressing and resolving knots can reduce pain overall—throughout the myofascial tissues and beyond.
Myofascial Massage clients report increased physical flexibility, which is a logical effect of such therapy. When muscle knots are resolved, muscles are allowed to relax, which opens up joints and muscles to their full ranges of motion.
And when your body is forced to deal with trauma, whether that’s a micro-tear in a calf muscle, a surgery, or some other event, your muscles have to do a lot of hard work to recover. Anything out of the norm, like knotted muscles, negatively impact the body’s natural healing process. Eliminating hurdles, like muscle knots, helps the body recover faster and more effectively.

In a word, yes. Myofascial Massage therapy can help relieve back pain. It might not be a cure for your back pain and the benefits may not last long term. Still, studies indicate that massage—and myofascial or deep tissue massage, in particular—are as effective as many other common and popular treatments for back pain, including chiropractic care.
It stands to reason that the focused manual pressure and stretching that are a part of Myofascial Massage therapy aid in the relief of back pain since the process and techniques involved loosen up tight muscles and reverse restricted movement.
Because of the deep tissue nature of a Myofascial Massage, you may experience some soreness or stiffness after your session. There are several things we recommend to help:
Any post-massage soreness should dissipate in about a day or so.
