Stimulate Your Senses by Trying Out a Relaxing Aromatherapy Massage

What is Aromatherapy?

Everything you need to know

More and more people are discovering the benefits of aromatherapy. Combined with the power of a registered massage therapist, aromatherapy can be one of the most rejuvenating and relaxing massage techniques available.

This is because not only will an aromatherapy massage near you stimulate your sore muscles and stiff joints, but aromatherapy also works on your olfactory senses (i.e. your sense of smell). The combination of touch with oils that have been shown to help you relax brings you into a whole new level of deep relaxation.

In terms of the massage itself, you’ll likely experience a massage that is similar to a Swedish massage with its kneading, circular motions, and gentle tapping. The only difference is the use of the oils, which, as mentioned, stimulate the olfactory senses. Keep in mind, though, essential oils can also have an effect on the skin providing cooling and warming sensations.

Prior to your aromatherapy massage at In2itive Touch & Wellness, you can discuss the oils with your rmt in Brampton so you’re aware of what senses to expect from each oil.

What essential oils are used?

If you’re not familiar with essential oils, you might be curious about what oils are used and how they work to promote relaxation.

What oils are used will vary from client to client, and will depend on what you’re seeking from your massage. Oftentimes, a combination of oils is used to get the best results.

Some of the more popular essential oils used in massage include chamomile and lavender to help calm the mind, rosemary oil for energy, and rose and ylang-ylang for an uplifting feeling and overall sense of wellness.

Please be aware that essential oils are not for everyone. For some, the scents can be overpowering, but we will do everything in our power to test the oils prior to your massage to ensure they don’t impact your experience negatively. If you'd like to opt for a different, but equally relaxing and uplifting experience, come to us for a lymphatic drainage massage.

Essential oils are said to work by stimulating the limbic system, which is a region in your brain that is known to be involved in emotion.

  • Key Benefits

An aromatherapy massage carries all the same wonderful benefits of a Swedish massage, which includes a reduction in muscle tension and stress, an increase in blood flow and body mobility, along with improvements to your mood, sleep, and energy levels.

In addition to all of these key benefits, we add the essential oils on top, and this massage technique is easily one of the most beneficial for a variety of ailments.

  • Supporting Your Health

Essential oils have shown to offer support to those struggling with insomnia, depression, anxiety, and menstrual pain. This support occurs both through the actual scent itself, but also by the body absorbing the oils when they are applied to the skin.

If you’re struggling with any of these issues, it’s important to let your therapist know so that they can come up with an essential oil blend that is best suited to you.

  • Elevate Your Mood

The use of essential oils has more general benefits as well, including elevated mood, less stress, and an overall calming effect on the body.

With all the same benefits as a Swedish massage, including reduced muscle tension and increased energy, an aromatherapy massage takes all those benefits and improves upon them with the use of essential oils. Benefits experienced from essential oils can include generalized mood improvements but can also help those struggling with depression and anxiety.

History

Essential Oils

If you’re interested in experiencing the benefits of essential oils during your massage, you’ll likely want to know a bit more about how they work and how they gained their popularity.

Essential oils come from plants, distilled with a carrier oil. More specifically, essential oils come from inside the plants (i.e seeds, bark, roots, flowers) where many powerful compounds lie.

What many people love about essential oils is their natural properties. In a world where many lotions and skincare products contain harmful chemicals, more and more people are searching for natural solutions like essential oils. This works wonderfully with
massage therapy since lotion and oils are often used when massaging the body. Essential oils offer a natural oil solution to use on the body, while also stimulating the olfactory system, which can have just as powerful of an impact.

While essential oils may have historically been used exclusively in cultural practices and traditions, today, more research is coming out that demonstrates the positive impact essential oils can have on our daily lives.

Precautions

While essential oils are almost always safe, there are some scenarios that are important to be aware of.

Most obviously, if you have any allergies to common essential oils you’ll want to let your therapist know. If you’re not sure and you’re prone to skin sensitivity, we recommend testing out the oils prior to your massage or gradually increasing oil use with each appointment (i.e start with a basic
Swedish massage, try out essential oils on one shoulder, move to two shoulders, entire back, etc). Your therapist can help guide you if you’re uncertain about your sensitivity to essential oils.

In addition, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding we do not recommend an aromatherapy massage. While many essential oils are perfectly safe to use, we recommend being cautious during this time.

When enjoying
aromatherapy, at In2itive Touch & Wellness, rest assured that you will receive the best of care. We use the highest quality essential oils and will do our utmost to ensure you have the best experience possible.
